What is Physical Wellness?

Physical health is the centre focus of most people idea of wellness. Although we know its much more complicated than that, even physical wellness gets greatly neglected by so many people. But with everything physical wellness includes is it any wonder it gets ignored?

Physical wellness includes but is not limited to

  • Physical activity/movement
  • Exercise
  • Rest
  • Relaxation
  • Nutrition
  • Metal Health

For optimal physical wellness it is not only key to get adequate amounts of all of these elements, but also to learn how to listen to your body again. This is something that should come naturally to us, but is often unlearnt at an early age when we start to fit into a schedule of school.

Physical wellness is the most defined measure of physical health. It is where your body starts ringing the alarm bells that another part of your wellness has been neglected. But that doest mean it should be the only form of wellness to focus on; you need to care of yourself as a whole.

For the majority of people managing physical wellness along side fast paced and over stimulated modern lifestyles, whilst of course also balenceing the other dimensions of wellness….. becomes overwhelming. And as with a lot of things in life that become overwhelming it goes on the back burner.

I will stop myself for now going on a tangent about why physical wellness needs becoming overwellming in society (because I very much believe it does not have to be so) and get right down to why physical wellness is so important for the full spectrum of the dimensions of wellness.

Emotional Wellness: Pain, fatigue, malnutrition, stress are just some of the side effects from poor physical health, and each one can have a detrimental effect on our emotions and mental wellbeing. when we are dealing with physical problems the over cloud our ability to hear what our emotions are trying to tell us. Emotions are not somthing to be stamped down, they are signals trying to tell us somthing, having our physical needs met helps us to gain the patience to listen.

Occupational Wellness: Without physical wellness the opportunity for occupational wellness is greatly reduced, ill health can reduce energy or physical capabilities within work. However poor physical health can also be the driving force towards finding a greater purpose (such as how restorative wellbeing was born) Poor occupational health, through stress or a lack of purpose can damage physical health, making it harder to take care of your self physically. Physical activity can or course also be a source of occupational wellness, especially for those who compete professionally, but also those who take part in hobby sports and activities.

Social Wellness: Poor physical health can effect our ability to socialise. On the extreme of ill health, it becomes more difficult to leave the house and cancelling social engagements becomes more regular. With an active mindset towards achieving optimal physical health new healthy social opportunities can flourish, from meeting people at the gym, or doing team sports, to getting to know local greengrocers, farmers and herbalists. When our focus on physical health is not prominent, most social opportunities in modern society revolve around damaging habits such as alcohol consumption.

Intellectual Wellness: Physical wellness and intellect don’t stereotypically go hand in hand. But there are so many intellectual benefits to staying physically well. Exercise can boost blood circulation, relieve stress and promotes brain development all of which can improve your concentration. Eating the right foods can also help improve your concentration and memory! Surely both of these are vital for tour intellect.

Spiritual Wellness: For a lot of people food can deepen their spiritual connection, just look at how much of a focal point food plays in religious festivals. Food can also play a big role in ethics and moral beliefs, with great passion. Sometimes this can be very beneficial to our physical health, especially when using traditional healing herbs that have been passed down through generations. However we need to be open to what practices may be harmful too. Holding an ideology that salads are ‘rabbit food’ could be leaving you starved of vital nutrition. Taking time to find a balance between your spiritual health and physical health would be beneficial for us all. When it comes the physical movement with in spiritual beliefs yoga is the perfect example, although in western countries yoga is far from where it was originally mainly focusing on asanas (poses) when in its original form it is a beautiful way to show how caring for our bodies can be a ingrained in a spiritual practice. But of course spiritual wellness is also about non religious beliefs, many people have morals and ethics around engaging in exercise to, it can give them a great sense of southing greater than themselves.

Now Physical Wellness is a complex subject, but somthing we should all look to master. This is really our biggest specialty at Restorative Wellbeing, but I take you through every dimension of wellness, and write articles relating to each, because I want you to value that we are whole beings, and when you are trying to restore your wellbeing you need to look at yourself as whole. You may think you are just trying to eat healthier, but the need to look deep and find the reasons why that might not be so easy. This is how you make long term change and true positive impact on your life.
